The real reason why stock markets are crashing

by MR Venkatesh - Rediff.com
In a way it captures the irony of our times. Isn’t it a bit strange that Saudi Arabia, the perceived beneficiary of the relentless oil price hike, should host a summit expressing ‘concern’ on the rising oil prices?
This high-profile summit was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, last week after crude prices […]…

Dangers involved with stocks

Of the many talks about stocks and the good thing about stock investments, often other people may overlook the danger of having one. There is that risk factor involved and it is imperative that you accept it. The market can vary. In an hour or even by minutes, what you have in great amount may be reduced to almost nothing!…

NYTimes: Hording Nations Drive Food Costs Ever Higher

The NYTimes to its credit is one of the few media outlets where the food crisis is even mentioned. They are doing a quality series on the subject dating back to the beginning of the year - if you are interested the articles can all be found here. As with all things (most) media has conveniently forgotten the crisis to move onto new subjects - after all, much like Iraq (which is barely mentioned on nightly news anymore - I mean all it is, is a war) - and New Orleans (hello, still a broken town once you leave the tourist areas), Americans cannot be bothered with the same old news and need new and exciting stimuli. We’ll keep it on the front burner - so when the mainstream media find it interesting again you won’t be surprised… we’ve been among the first on this beat [J…

Going Wide

Better late than never, I’ve gone wide and this blog now fills up the entire computer screen. I don’t know if doing this makes it easier to read or what. But it seems every quality blog I come across has done this and I’m sure there is a reason (or reasons) why. So I’m joining the “width counts” sentiment that’s prevailing across the blog universe. As many of you have guessed by now, I can be pretty slow on the uptake when it comes to matters technical. I’ve even considered hiring someone to re-do my design and make sure I have all the right tags, or whatnot, going for Controlled Greed. (I was thinking about deleting the .com after Controlled Greed in the masthead. But I like it even though it signifies how very un-hip I am.)…

CNBC: Merrill Lynch (MER) May Unload Blackrock (BLK) Stake to Raise Capital

Blackrock (BLK) broke down badly this week, with closes below its 200 day moving average for the first time since the worst of the March 08 selloff. I thought it was simply getting caught up in the “all things financial are evil” thinking, but with the huge volume spike Friday it appears the culprit is the fact Merrill Lynch (MER) is so desperate for cash it could be forced to sell off its Blackrock stake for capital….

Change of fortune for my 3 problem stocks?

As the end of the 2nd quarter nears, I am getting a few rays of hope from the three stocks that have caused the most head scratching over the last quarter. All three were chosen for this site’s tracking portfolios as well as my personal accounts because they appeared to be good companies that the market had beaten down too far. Well, I was wrong, they had much farther to fall. Each has shown surprising strength over the last couple of days even as the broader market (Russell 3000 Index) has fallen by almost 4% over the last two trading days. On to the individual stocks:

What is a Secondary Offering and Why Should I Care?

Besides Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), the fund that I manage is also very involved in secondary offerings. The concept of secondary offerings may not be very familiar to most individual investors, but it actually may have more of an effect on the price of stocks they participate in than originally thought.
A secondary offering is […]

“Now’s the time to buy and hold”

Now’s the time to buy and hold, says T. Rowe Price’s Rogers - MarketWatch
Just reading/scanning through the couple of hundred comments shows the T. Rowe Price chief investment officer is probably right. Skip the article linked above, go straight to the comments. (Grab a nice scotch first, I am having a Grant’s)….

CSCO: Look Ahead to July 2008 Results

Our analysis of Cisco’s April 2008 quarter, the third of the fiscal year, resulted in an Overall Gauge score of 46 of the 100 possible points, just about matching the score after the January quarter. Both Revenue and Net Income grew at decelerating rates, although earnings benefited to some extent from a decline in the effective income tax rate. More positively, the R…

How are the Dow Components Doing this Year?

The Dow Jones Industrial Index (DJIA) is the most widely followed index, holding our 30 most dear and near corporations - the names everyone knows. It actually has a very convoluted methodology which gives weight to the stocks within the indix by PRICE instead of market capitalization like most indexes. Hence the higher the stock price (which is quite an arbitrary thing, since if a stock splits 2:1 it should not matter to its “importance” in an index) the more it affects the DJIA. If you are interested in the morbid details (you engineering types) y…

Weekend Stuff for Political Junkies

For any of you political junkies out there - here is an interesting site with analysis and compilations of all the polling - fivethirtyeight.com. Some good stuff.

Back when the blog started, and everyone was still talking about Iraq as “the issue” last summer and recession / inflation were laughable concepts in the mainstream, I predicted whomever came out of the Democratic side (at the time it was looking like a H…

NYTimes: U.S. Freezes Solar Projects on Public Land for 2 Years

Watch they do (this) versus what they say (we feel so much empathy for the public of the US, we need to find ways to bring down the price of energy!). Environmental impact? Of “renewable” energy? Are they serious? So much for my mandate for a Manhattan Project of Energy, which included taking huge pieces of public land in sun drenched southwest and putting solar farms all over. Have to study the impact on the environment first. And “two” years, really means “four” years.
