Strip emotions out of your decisions

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 22:19

Looking for the right stock has never been harder but there is always a need for having helpful stock market investment advice. Investors, however rush in as they keep plunking money down as if tomorrow never comes. Why is it so?
The ease of trading may seem to be a siren’s call. And the image of the investor maybe compared to that of a day trader, an average Joe who attempts to hoard a fortune from the comfort of his own computer. Nonetheless, the ease of investing is not what matters most….

Mid-Year Stock Picking Results

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 21:45

I’ll post these over the course of this week. Or perhaps over the July 4th holiday. It depends on how hectic things are in the next few days. I think it’s safe to say the results won’t be pretty. So stay tuned — especially if you’re the type who likes car wrecks. ;-) …

Barron’s Coming Full Circle on GM (Sort Of)

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 20:59

Randall Forsyth pens the “Up and Down Wall Street” column in this week’s Barron’s, and gets around (scroll down) to General Motors (GM/NYSE). He notes that GM stock has fallen about one-third since Barron’s recommended the shares in a cover story earlier this month. For those of us holding even longer, the performance is even worse — GM stock is down about 70% from its peak of $43.20 last fall.

Sell LJ International

30 June, 2008 Uncategorized | Comments (0) @ 20:40

JADE - LJ International (NASDAQ) - (Closing Price - $2.79)
I recommended LJ International as a speculative pick based on the company finally reporting earnings. However, the company didn’t get a pre-earnings run like I thought and the company reported disappointing results. Therefore, I am going to recommend to sell LJ International.
Disclaimer: I sold my position in [...]…

An Interesting Way to Play Global Warming - Carbon Credits? iPath Global Carbon ETN (GRN)

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 10:30

There has been a literal avalanche of new ETFs and ETNs the past year, and even the past quarter - especially of the commodity kind. Most of which are uninteresting to me, but a few that have piqued my interest - I am probably missing others simply because so many seem to be coming out by the week/month. I have a few I am trying to write longer pieces on but have not had the time to devote to do them justice, but one ETN I wanted to point out is …

Getting Defense-ive

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 10:00

My latest column is up at RealMoney.
New orders for manufactured durable goods in May increased slightly to $213.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced last week. This was the first increase in three months, and it followed a 1.0% April decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.9%. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 0.6%.
Behind that bland summary, though, is usually a wealth of information that I believe could be useful for picking the best industries in which to invest. This month, the signal was clear. Get defensive. Among a sea of industries seeing declining sales and orders, one stood out for its strength: defense aircraft and parts.

CNBC Bonus Bucks Trivia: According to the CNBC Stock Blog “Powering Your Portfolio: Uranium” what is uranium miner Cameco’s other business?

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 9:43

According to the CNBC Stock Blog “Powering Your Portfolio: Uranium” what is uranium miner Cameco’s other business?
Looking to miners, Canada’s Cameco (CCJ) has a market capitalization of more than $13 billion and is the world’s largest uranium producer. It also mines gold.
Cameco scores average for each of the models I follow with the exception of return potential. It gets a low score there.

Who Says Indexes are Not Performance Chasers?

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 7:38

This really is beginning to remind me of the late 90s and technology when every index was in a hurry to stuff itself with tech stocks. Fresh off two of our holdings (natural gas and coal) being added to the S&P 500 [Jun 13: Cabot Oil & Gas (COG) and Massey Energy (MEE) Added to S&P 500] the R…

Listen to the Companies; not the Government Reports - Brunswick Corp (BC) & Smithfield Foods (SFD)

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 7:30

I have no idea what the market will be doing today, this week, this month, or this year. I have been saying the real economy is in serious trouble, and that was an impression oil would be at $90-$110 or so. What we have now is ever more frightful. The market has been and continues to be in denial; I have pointed this out repeatedly even in the face of conventional wisdom as the market raced to new highs in fall 2007. I continue to stress most traders on Wall Street have been conditioned to corporate led recessions - not consumer led. This is the first consumer led recession since the late 70s/early 80s and it appears most market participants are not students of history. We still live in denial - only now in inflation. Inflation is a tax on all things - consumers and producers….

30 June, 2008 Fundamental Analysis | Comments (0) @ 6:17

According to the blog post, “Air Products: Cutting Edge of Alt Energy?”, how does Jim Cramer describe the U.S.?
Since the U.S. is known as the Saudi Arabia of coal – at least that’s what Cramer calls it – this could be a big step toward energy independence.
