Market Makers Snared Me in Riverbed Technology (RVBD)

The market makers in Riverbed Technology (RVBD) just have to be laughing amongst themselves; they did very well Thursday. With a large drop in the first 30 minutes (down to $21.60) they must of snared a bevy of stop loss orders (including mine @ $21.90) - the rest of the day RVBD was on a 45 degree angle up to finish almost unchanged. I wrote This is the first penetration of the 20 day moving average since March. Not so much - as you can see belowAs I warnedAs always the closing price is more important than the midday, and we are prone to being “shaken out” of positions by taking intraday …

Summer 2009 Stock Market Evlauation

With the end of June comes the start of summer: warm air, hot beaches and, sometimes, choppy waters. The following is a recap of last month’s market action and key developments from “30,000 feet” .
The month of June saw North American stocks end up in slightly positive territory. On a total return basis, the S&P/TSX […]…

The next big bet, inflation???

moneysIt is a fairly known law in economics; pumping new money in an economy will lead to inflation later on. There is little to argue about and yet in a period of high crisis, that is exactly what the US government decided to do. Not to say that there were better alternatives. With crippled credit, […]…

Nine Stocks Giving Shareholders A Raise In The Second Quarter

In 1985 I graduated from college and took my first job as a staff accountant with a $21,000 annual salary. Now I am over the same department that I was hired into and now entry level staff accountants start with a base salary of $56,500 per year. That equates to a 4.2% annual increase. Just […]

Five for the Weekend #47 — July 4th Weekend Edition

With Saturday being Independence Day here in the US, Controlled Greed is declaring victory and taking Friday off. We hope all our Canadian readers enjoyed a great Canada Day on Wednesday. Here are five items you might wish to check out over the next three days.

The jobs report was a downer, showing US unemployment at 9.5%. The Lex take in the Financial Times: “This is a volatile measure. But if the disheartened are only now

ceasing their search for work, that suggests a drawn out

period?in?which?they rejoin the labour force, lifting the unemployment

rate. And they are right to be…

Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR) Head & Shoulders Top

I’ve talked quite a bit about the head and shoulders top formations in the Dow and S&P500 in recent weeks and it looks like we might get confirmation of those topping formations soon, based on early trading action today.  What that means is that there is going to be an abundance of ways to play […]…

Bookkeeping: Closing Potash (POT), Mosaic (MOS) - Selling Short Potash (POT)

The fertilizer names have been much weaker than the commodity space as a whole… today they are green in a sea of red on a Russian price increase, but really Potash (POT) just warned of yet another production cut just 2 weeks ago. We have short attention spans.I see a low risk short opportunity and I want to begin expanding my short exposure with some of my cash. I still find “reflation” to be a tired, crowded trade and I think technology has a great chance to join it soon. But all in good time. I have almost no individual short exposure right now so I am going to slowly build some as the…

This Just In: Hunter S. Thompson Now Working for Credit Suisse!

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold…. —From “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” by Hunter S. Thompson. So begins the best opening line to a book since…well, if there’s a better one, I can’t remember it.And while the link between the musings of a drug-addled, gun-crazy journalist and that of Wall Street’s Finest might seem weak at best, we here at NotMakingThisUp nominate the following headline (from the indispensible Briefing.com) as Exhibit A in the Case that Hunter S. Thompson did not shoot himself dead, but is in fact work…

Bookkeeping: Stopped Out of Allegiant Travel (ALGT) Trade this Morning

The 2.5 percent Allegiant Travel (ALGT) short I put on Monday stopped out at $40.05 this morning. As I stated a few weeks ago I am going to be much more firm with my stop losses on both long and short positions even if it shakes me out. Thus far we can consider my short position shook out…the stock jumped to just under $40.50 and then reversed as the oil up airlines down trade reared its head again. The stock is now back under $39. Looking at the chart I am ok with where I placed the stop..the stock had to shoot through multiple layers of resistance to reach my stop. The main issue is t…

Corning (GLW) Raises Guidance for 2nd Time in 5 Weeks Due to…. What Else? China

Corning (GLW) is a very interesting situation situated at the far end of the supply chain (very close to the end consumer) - it has been posting some positive data points the past few months but what does it tell us overall? The tech sector has been the one area of sustained domestic out performance for the 1st half of 2009 - some of this is due to stronger than average balance sheets (high cash, low debt), some of it is due to “playbook” - especially in the semiconductor space. When you believe the economy is turning around one of the early cycle sectors you run into (en masse) is semis…So…

Myriad Genetics (MYGN) Implodes After Hours on Revenue Miss

How far Myriad Genetics (MYGN) has fallen - this had been one of the star stocks of the last 12 months as it seemed to do no wrong. In fact during 2 of the worst swoons in market history (Sep-Oct 08, and Jan-Feb 09) the stock held its ground and/or advanced! But the past few months have not treated it kindly. Last night after the bell Myriad came out with a “slight” revenue warning - $86M for fiscal fourth quarter (analysts had estimated $91.6M as consensus); so a 6% shortfall. This miss takes them to a $326M year versus prior guidance of $330M, and analysts $336M.For that the stock was do…

Four Stocks With Strong Dividend Growth Metrics

When evaluating a company as a potential income investment you look at its calculated fair value, ability to generate cash, debt position and the net present value of its dividend stream compared alternative “safe” investments.
