The first ASPO conference I attended was in 2006, in Pisa, where it was hosted by Ugo Bardi. While I was there, I had the good fortune to meet Dennis Meadows, a man whose work I have known since i was very young, but which now has much more relevance than I first imagined. During his address, he told us an important thing: As events start unfolding and a general awareness of depletion arises, ASPO will loose its r…

Rolling Stone has an interesting n endemic corruption in Washington, having a look at the bottomless pit of taxpayer money (well - until the US Treasury is completely bankrupt anyway) being funnelled into the pockets of well-connected corporations - The New Trough. The Wall Street bailout looks a lot like Iraq — a “free-fraud zone” where private contractors cash in on the mess they helped create….

Google Earth is an excellent tool for environmental activism. And of course it was only a matter of time before they developed an app for the iPhone – putting the tool right in your pocket (if you have an iPhone, of course).
So, if you have this amazing tool on your iPhone, wouldn’t it be great to use it to defeat the forces of evil, or at least have some fun? We’ve gathered up a few ways you can use the Google Earth iPhone app to save the planet. …

The NYTimes commissioned an independent study of McCain and Obama’s tax plans:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/31/us/politics/31taxes.html
If you make less than $100,000 (and the plan is implemented), you’ll save more with Obama. $100,000-250,000 the plans are roughly equal. More than $250,000 and you’ll save more with McCain.

We are quickly approaching party season and people are starting to think about their events. Personally, I love giving dinner parties and twenty or more people is no problem for me at all. I realize that I’m a bit unusual in this and many people find entertaining quite stressful. It can, of course, be stressful for the guests as well, especially if you don’t know the hosts or other guests that well. Here are a few things to think about it if you are hosting or attending a dinner party where vegetarians and meat eaters will be sharing the table.

Current financial crisis could speed up consolidation in PV industry
by: Edwin Koot, CEO solarplaza, 31 October 2008
Source: SolarPlaza.com press release
The global solar energy market in 2008 is expected to grow by 50% compared to 2007. The Chinese solar PV industry is growing rapidly and will soon be the biggest producer of solar cells and modules in the world. There are now over 100 Chinese solar module manufacturers, and even more new market players are expected in the short term. The question is: what might the current credit crisis and pessimistic economic forecasts mean for the PV market and industry in 2009? With solar modules becoming a commodity product, China will definitely be playing a key role as a major producer of solar cells and modules. However, if we look at the maturity of the PV industry right now, and what has happened in other industries, an imminent consolidation phase seems likely. That could mean that fewer producers, and only the bigger ones among them, will survive. So which companies are likely to be the winners, and be reliable business partners for the long term?…

Once upon a time they were known as HTH’s - HomeTown Honeys. This was the acronym ascribed to those undergrad, freshman dorm-dwellers who had had The Conversation with their high school sweetheart and decided that they were going to stick together, the thick and thin thing, even though they were now 1200 miles apart, in separate colleges, and would be for (at least) 4 more years.
The magnanimous valor of the afflicted parties cannot be underestimated; airdropped into the college environment, burning with hormones, enduring ungodly peer pressure, and surrounded by nothing but booze-fuel as far as the keg stand can see, these intrepids must endure 5 weekda…

CanWEA Releases Wind Vision 2025 Plus Results of Important Wind Power Survey:
The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) released its strategic vision for wind energy development during its 24th Annual Conference and Trade Show taking place this week in Vancouver. The plan, Wind Vision 2025 - Powering Canada’s Future, cites rapidly rising energy costs, reducing the country’s environmental impacts caused by current electricity generation, the need to quickly build more electricity generation to keep up with rising demand and the need to build a more robust transmission system a key drivers for the adoption of wind technology.

I don’t normally pay much attention to the quarterly earnings reports of companies outside the energy sector, so I initially missed the confusion over the impact of fuel hedging on the third quarter results of Southwest Airlines. An article in yesterday’s Washington Post brought this to light again, along with the effect of falling oil prices on the fuel hedging efforts of a diverse group of companies, including Coca Cola, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and local heating oil distributors. The reporting on this subject illustrates two important points: commodities hedging is no free lunch, and understanding its full consequences requires more that a superficial look at the bottom line….

Sometimes, I have to admit, when predictions are made, I can be just wrong. Asked, early in the summer as to the wisdom of buying winter supplies of heating oil in the North East, I suggested that there would be a likely continued rise in price, and that with distributors having problems, that an early securing of supplies would pay off. Well it is not happening. Recent stories have …
