Edward Harrison makes a good point about the unreliability of GDP numbers: the headline GDP number is equal to nominal GDP growth minus the GDP deflator — a measure of broad inflation. When the Q4 2007 GDP growth was revised from +0.6% to -0.2%, half of that was due to the deflator being revised upwards from 2.44% to 2.84%. In Q1 2008, the revised inflation figure was 2.63%. So we’re in a world of inflation somewhere between 2.5% and 3.0%? Not according to the Q2 2008 deflator, which was a very low 1.06%.

This morning on CNBC I was on a peak oil panel with Matthew Simmons. I’m a fan of his, even if I don’t always agree with some of his comments, but I thought this morning wasn’t one of his best performances. First, I thought he pushed out the peak, talking squishily about a few years rather than saying it was already here. Correct me, but I think that’s new. Second, he was softer about the Saudis than usual. First he argued that fields there may not be in decline there, but we are seeing higher production costs. Then he turned around and argued that production is in decline, and Saudi data can’t be trusted so we need to send in auditors. I have trouble with both of those arguments, and both seem like material changes in his views. …

Techdirt notes in CAFC Judge Regrets Decisions That Resulted In Software Patents that one of the federal judges on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit admits that he was “troubled by the unintended consequences” of the earlier decisions that resulted in the proliferation of software and business model patents. Well at least he regrets it!
Now libertarian proponents of state legal systems are for some reason optimistic about the ability of state legislature and courts to promulgate just laws. Objectivist attorney Murray Franck , for example, w…

Joanna Slater has this bit on comments made by a notably bearish sort.
Jeremy Grantham, one of the founders of asset manager GMO, isn?t known for looking on the sunny side of things (he referred to himself as a ?perma-bear? in a recent note).
But one area where he was unabashedly enthusiastic was when it came to investing in emerging-market stocks, w…

Today before the close of the market, former Fed-Head Alan Greenspan participated in an interview on CNBC with Maria Bartoromo. The good news is that he’s no longer hard to understand at all. The bad news is that he’s no longer hard to understand at all. You might be able to blame part of the late day selling on him, at least in Fannie Mae (NYSE: FNM) or Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE).

Dennis Berman digs up a fascinating excerpt on short-selling from the 1932 hearings on the stock market crash. it’s a shame we don’t seem to have anyone in Congress now even capable of formulating the question asked by New York Congressman Frank Oliver: “They blamed the ’shorts,’ whereas, as a matter of fact, if the prices were inflated, they should have blamed the ‘longs’ for having inflated them?”
