Riding and Reminiscing

While on an evening bike ride with my oldest son, we reminisced about one of the first government meetings we attended together — an annexation hearing before our county commissioners. Looking back, we agreed that the meeting turned out to be an invaluable opportunity to witness government in action.

At the hearing, the attorney for the petitioner — a single property owner seeking to be annexed by the local city — presented first. The attorney stood at the podium holding a small folder. He began, “We present the completed application and forms as required by law. We believe that we have met all legal requirements. We therefore ask that you grant the petition as filed.” He sat down.

Mosaic’s Monster Dividend (MOS)

The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) has decided to start paying out a dividend to shareholders. The company’s board of directors has declared a quarterly dividend of $0.05 per share on the common stock payable each quarter. This dividend will be paid on August 21, 2008 to stockholders of record as of the close on August 7, 2008. Future dividends declarations are subject to approval by the board.

Natural Gas Plunges

Natural gas dropped sharply Thursday, losing 7.6% on the New York Mercantile Exchange to hit a 13-week low. The sell-off widens its losses to more than 20% from the early-July highs.

Best Day Ever

I’ll have more on this later, but today was the best day ever for our Buy List relative to the market. The Buy List gained 2.95% which is 175 basis points better than the S&P 500. The big gainer today was Amphenol (APH) which added 14.6%.

For the year, we’re down -11.23% compared with -14.17% for the rest of the market….
