Who should police the Internet?

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 23:51

Coming soon to an auction site near you. (Remy de la Mauviniere/AP)
That’s the question, and the answer appears to be: anyone who wants to, especially if they’re in a big enough economy to matter to multinational online businesses. The luxury goods giant LVMH has won another case in French court as part of its [...]…

Those pesky savers

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 21:19

According to a report from the Washington Post and The Columbus Dispatch, the genesis of the housing market bubble was global wealth; not excess meaningless paper, but true wealth.

So the bubble was not caused by the FED, the bubble occurred because a “a growing amount of savings, particularly in developing countries, fueled an investment bubble.” But wait, wasn’t the savings just excess meaningless paper printed by our old friends the FED? Hmmm….

Deep Market Thoughts…Exit Strategies and What If’s

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 21:06

George Carlin (RIP) has/had a great bit about ’stuff’:

The average investor treats their stock portfolio like they do their ’stuff’. We are good at collecting it/them, but not good at getting rid of them. We all have had stocks we are embrassed to have owned, forgot why we bought and held well beyond caring. The best investors just do this less. I would use my standard golf analogy about managing the bad shots, but Tiger Woods has destroyed the theory. He can hit awful shots and recover on the next one. You won’t do that though in the investing world.

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 21:00

Indonesia’s trade surplus was $3.2 billion in May, doubling April’s figure of $1.6 billion. The dramatic rise was caused by strong exports growth and slower imports growth in May compared to April.…

Should an SBA Chief Have Experience As a Business Owner?

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:30

President Bush?s new choice to lead the U.S. Small Business Administration, Sandy Baruah, is already raising some questions and concerns among small-business groups.
Sandy BaruahNamely: Shouldn?t the head of the government?s small-business arm have actual experience running a small business?
Like outgoing chief Steven Preston, the former executive vice president of ServiceMaster Co. who?s now secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Baruah, pictured here, was never a small-business owner. He?s spent the past several years as an economic-development official in the Commerce Department. Before that, he worked seven years for a Portland, Ore., corporate-consulting firm.

Save a Smoker, Buy ‘em an iPhone

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:22

Got any friends that smoke? Buy them a mobile phone, ideally one with an expensive data plan, like an iPhone. Turns out that the incremental expense could save their life: Using panel data from 2,100 households in 135 communities of the Philippines collected in 2003 and 2006, the analysis finds that mobile phone ownership leads to a 20 percent decline in monthly tobacco consumption. Among households in which at least one member smoked in 2003, purchasing a mobile phone leads to a 32.6 percent decrease in tobacco consumption per adult over the age of 15. This is equivalent to one less pack of 20 cigarettes per month per adult. The results are robust to various estimation strategies. Further, they suggest that this impact materializes through a budget shift from tobacco to communication. …

Making the Deflationary Case

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:04

Last week I cited a welling@weeden interview with two Credit Suisse strategists that made the case for inflation rapidly coming down, here is a Gavel report — albeit somewhat graph-happy — that makes the same case. The crux of the piece is the following two graphs. The first shows the role of banks in expanding credit in the economy and helping drive inflation, and the second argues that the velocity of such credit expansion has gone nastily negative. …

Small Banks Looking Smaller

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 19:55

Admittedly I wouldn’t want to be running a small U.S. bank right now, but you have to be in awe at downbound stats like these: …more than half of those institutions with assets worth between $1bn and $10bn have commercial real estate loan portfolios that exceed 300 per cent of their capital, according to recent FDIC data. Similarly, almost 30 per cent of US community banks have construction and development loans exceeding 100 per cent …

The Buy List’s Mid-Year Report

30 June, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 19:53

Ugh, we choked at the last minute! Going into today, the Crossing Wall Street Buy List had a comfortable lead over the S&P 500. But today, we collapsed. The S&P 500 rose by 0.13%, but our Buy List lost (yuck!) -1.49%.

Today was the worst relative performance for us all year.

For the year so far, the S&P 500 is off by -12.83% while our Buy List is down -13.47%. The Buy List’s daily volatility is 6.27% greater than the S&P 500.
