How NOT To Be a Partner…Be Mike Arrington

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 17:45

I showed the video below once this week, but Mike’s dumb rant about his tiny startup investment is all drama and no meat. He is the shitty partner and I would never want him on my team. In fact, if Loic had told him, Mike would have demanded an exclusive.
The guy thinks his blog being down for an hour is like people not getting rice or food. I would like to donate $100 to Gabe and …

Does SPAC Really Spell SCAM?

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 15:33

To be clear, I don’t see the SPAC industry itself as bad. Well, not too bad. What I do see, however, is an industry that might be moving towards a role that is neither good for SPAC investors nor consistent with an alignment of interests among private equity firms, SPAC sponsors and their investors. A good friend of mine got my thoughts flowing after forwarding me a r…

World Competitive Report

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 14:06

According to the IMD Business School Yearbook, India’s competitive rank has slipped.  Moreover their IT readiness for the 21st century is abysmal.  The latter is mainly due to the government’s weak strategy on internet connectivity and usage.  It’s simply inexcusable to be lacking in IT readiness.

Competitive ranking is down due the continued road blocks placed in front of…

More roadblocks thrown up by India Government over Starbucks Entry

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 9:49

Starbucks India Logo?I saw this Starbucks article at Digitial Inspiration and from its source at The Mint which highlights how difficult it is to bring foreign brands into India.  Unfortunately, the short sighted politicians don’t think more than one step ahead because other foreign brands see what’s happening to one of the World’s most well known brand and think well if they are having trouble…

Fedspeak Highlights: Lockhart on Slowdown and Inflation

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 9:42

Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Dennis Lockhart said the economy is mired in weak growth amid persistent price gains, and added foreign economies are now less affected by events in the U.S. While Lockhart isn’t currently a voting member of the interest rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee, he continued to raise the specter of inflation indicating that concerns about inflation are increasing at the central bank and chances are high that the rate-cutting cycle is at an end. Starbucks Worth Little More With Peltz (SBUX, WEN)

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 8:50

Yesterday was a more than interesting day for Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX). The stock rose more than 6% to $17.05 after funds disclosed stakes in the coffee retailing giant. Activist investor Nelson Peltz disclosed that he had taken a stake of more than 842,000 shares via his Trian Partners as of March 31, 2008. Starbucks’ problems go back farther than that and shares were at $17.50 on that date. This stake is worth a little more than $14 million after Friday’s gain. Another hedge fund called Maverick Capital had taken a stake of about 12.5 million shares, which is a…

Estimated Relative Standard Errors in Housing Data

17 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 8:00

Regarding yesterday’s New Home Starts, an emailer writes:  You used to discuss the Commerce Dept.’s standard statistical error regularly. In light of that surprising Housing Start number, could you please update that?Sure thing. I love this sort of data sifting exercise. (I used to do this all the time, but I could actually hear readers falling asleep through my screen).
