The Commodity Boom Revisited…OIL VEY!

13 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 22:00

I was watching a Dodge Commercial today (owned by Daimler/Chrysler) and my jaw dropped:
“We are guaranteeing $2.99 gas for three years with every Dodge purchase’
Sure cars are leveraged to oil, but basically Dodge (Daimler) has decided it would be o.k. to further gamble on the future by placing a bet on oil. It’s all fun and games when you are so removed from the common shareholder.

PRI Flat Tax Study Released

13 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:30

I realize purists will object to any advocacy of taxation besides absolute zero, but even so I encourage people to read at least the first few chapters of my new study (.pdf) on California tax reform. I know I was surprised at some of the charts, even though I already believed in marginal tax rate reductions for moral reasons….

CEO Interview Owens-Illinois

13 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:17

Cramer welcomed Chairman and CEO Albert Stroucken of Owens-Illinois (OI) to his show to discuss his company’s prospects. Recently, OI reported solid earnings, crushing Wall Street estimates by 29 cents a share. The company also upped its outlook and and delivered strong free cash flow, but the stock fell after the report. Wall Street analysts and bears are worried that rising raw material costs and energy costs could hurt the company going forward. “We had a dramatic improvement in profitability because we had been underperforming for a number of years,” Stroucken said. “Now that OI is operating at a higher level profit growth may not be as high, but it still is going to be a good year-over-year comparison,” he added. Cramer asked him why did the analyst over react than? Stroucken said if he knew how the stock market worked he would no longer have to work for a living. He explained that OI is focused on finding new innovations and technologies to increase productivity and bring down costs. Cramer said he’s still bullish on OI.

Toll Brothers CEO Interview

13 May, 2008 Economy | Comments (0) @ 20:14

“I want to be bullish on the housing stocks, but I just can’t pull the trigger yet,” Jim Cramer told fans of his “Mad Money” TV show Tuesday. Cramer welcomed Robert Toll, chairman and CEO of Toll Brothers (TOL) to the show to discuss the housing market. Toll said the housing market could be saved if the government offered a similar plan to the one President Gerald Ford introduced in 1975. Ford gave homebuyers a tax credit as long as they acted before the end of the year. Toll thinks if Bush gave U.S. tax payers a $15,000 credit to buy homes the housing market would take off. Toll said he thinks the housing market could comeback after November’s general election. He mentioned that while most regions in the U.S. are in bad shape, he does see some strength in California and stabilization in Naples, Florida. He also said that Williamsburg and Hoboken, New Jersey are two of the best kept secrets in the housing market. Cramer said he can’t get behind the housing stocks here. He just isn’t sure if the housing market is back and feels it’s too early to make a move.
