Super-Angel Networks: Seed Capital 3.0

It seems as if everywhere I turn there is yet another article about a slowdown in venture capital investing. This from today’s Wall Street Journal:Facing an uncertain economic environment, venture capitalists showed restraint with their wallets in the first quarter.
These investors sank $6.8 billion into U.S. companies
across 603 deals in the period, according to data from Ernst &
Young and VentureSource, a division of Dow Jones & Co., publisher
of The Wall Street Journal. The deal total is the lowest since the
first quarter of 2005, while the investment level is down 8% from the
$7.4 billion recorded in the year-ago quarter and 9% in the fourth
quarter of 2007.

RBS May Write-Down $14 Billion

The only good news at Royal Bank of Scotland is that the bad news is not worse. RBS will probably write down another $14 billion and raise as much as $12 billion through a rights offering. “It will likely be a kitchen-sinking exercise. They only want to do this once,” one of the sources said according to Reuters. Those who thought the banking crisis was passing may want to think again. Douglas A. McIntyre

Except at Gas Pump, Not Much Spending Going On

Today’s chart porn is courtesy of the NYT’s Floyd Norris:”AMERICANS are cutting back on purchases of things they do not have to have, sending retail sales down sharply at many types of stores. Those cutbacks, which now seem to be worse than at any time since the 1990-91 recession, are helping to slow the economy and to spur calls in Washington for more fiscal stimulus even before the government starts to send out money to most taxpayers next month….
