Personality Profile of a Free-Marketeer: Extroverted, Disagreeable, Conscientious, Stable, and Closed

(July 4, 2009 10:30 PM, by Bryan Caplan) Left-right ideology is the single most powerful determinant of party identification and issue positions, but ideology itself is almost impossible to predict.  It does have a few mild correlates - for example, the well-educated are a little more liberal, the……

July 4th 2009 …FREEDOM….To STEAL!

It’s been an interesting year to say the least.
Michael Jackson, Bernie Madoff, Goldman Sachs, AIG, GM, Twitter and now Sarah Palin have outheadlined the rest of the world’s pain and suffering.
No matter what you say about Michael Jackson, there is little disputing the $500 million or so he left us in debt.
Bernie Madoff […]…

Solving the Peter Principle? One Word: “Darts”

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/79/Plastic-Dart.jpg/800px-Plastic-Dart.jpgThere is a fun new working paper out from some Italian scientists that models the Peter Principle. The principle says, of course, that people climb in an organization until they reach their level of maximum incompetence. How would that happen? Well, the authors argue it should be expected in any organization where the following two conditions hold: The best member are rewarded with promotions Competence in a new position is not highly correlated with competence at a prior level The authors simulated the preceding in a pyramidal organizational form using a mathematical agent model. H…

NYSE Cuts Trade Times to 5 Milliseconds

Back in my day, we didn’t have any of this new-fangled quick stuff. If we got executed in 300 milliseconds, we were thankful — dagnabit!!

NYSE Cuts Trade Times to 5 Milliseconds

NYSE Euronext cut order-execution times 20-fold at the New York Stock Exchange, part of an effort to catch up to faster competitors that have taken market share.

With the implementation of a new system for processing orders on the NYSE, customers will see trades executed within five milliseconds, compared with 105 milliseconds previously. As recently as 2007, the time was 350 milliseconds.

Wells Fargo Gives California July 10 Drop-Dead Date

Nice to have a firm date for when California must have a budget and stop shopping IOUs. Here is Wells Fargo from a release yesterday: Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) said today it will accept registered warrants issued by the State of California from its retail and business customers for a limited time. It will begin accepting the registered warrants for deposit on July 2, 2009 and stop accepting them no later than July 10, 2009. “We’re very disappointed, as are many Californians, that California has taken the unfortunate step of issuing IOUs in lieu of its payments to some bu…
