OK, put this on the category of “not predicting anything, just sayin…..”But remember tomorrow is expiration. And volatility is very high as evidenced by the VIX in the 70’s, although it does not feel quite as volatile as it did in October….

Is there anything an exchange traded fund (ETF) investor can do in a down market such as this besides grin and bear it?
Investment strategies such as stock picking and bond investing are all in the red, so why not a fundamentally weighted indexed ETF?

In an attempt to gain momentum and show some sign of hope, retailers are offering huge discounts allowing shoppers to get great bargains. One could only wonder if stocks, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and other securities are mimicking these bargains.
The desperation that has overcome the industry……

Yesterday, the market was able to rebound from an early decline. The bulls are trying to defend support at SPY 85 and eventually they will run out of gas. In the chart you can see the steep downtrend. Once the initial support was established in October, the market continued to test that level. A series of snapback rallies materialized and each recoil made a lower high. Sellers aggressively “sold the rips” and once again, we are testing SPY 85. Bad news plagues the market and that won’t change anytime soon. We have a lame duck President and a financial crisis that …

I’m posting a chart of the S&P 500 ($SPX.X) mid-week in honor of the new 5 1/2 year low. The Dow Jones is down there too, but I’m more interested in the $SPX since I have a decent sized play on SSO, the double the $SPX ETF. Again today I didn’t make a trade as I stood like a deer in headlights. Most technical traders were looking for support at 819. We closed below that mark by 13 points at 806. That could have turned into a landslide, but didn’t yet probably because we ran out of time. Tomorrow will be interesting to see if the last 30 minutes of the day is a sign of what’s to come.

It appears that most foreign investors have been attracted to U.S. assets. The Treasury department……

I’m moderately biased, but c’mon, even Eagles fans have to admit “Earth Wind and Fire” is the best football nickname ever. And hey, Earth may be playing after all. This from NJ.comTom Coughlin said RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) won’t practice and that will likely be the case during the team portion of today’s workout, which technically results in a “did not practice” classification on the injury report….

There is still an hour and a half left in the trading day, but it is beginning to look like the VIX will close over 70 for the first time this month and record its third highest close ever.At 2:37 p.m. ET the VIX is at 73.62, well off of the record 80.06 close from October 27 and the second place 79.13 close of October 24 from the preceding Friday.A lot can — and usually does — happen in the last half hour, but clearly the markets have a long way to go before fear and anxiety start to recede….

Lately there have been quite a few days when it looks as if the market is wearing ‘concrete shoes’ and will never be able to keep its head above water. Time and time again the financials look like those concrete shoes: financials plunge; the market follows. In fact the performance of financials relative to the broader market has been weakening steadily since early October 2006, when the ratio of financials (X…

Goldman Sachs is adding Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) to Conviction Buy List with a $68 tgt, representing 44% upside.RIMM is down 62% in the last 3 months compared to 51% for firm’s coverage median and 32% for the S&P 500, on concerns of slowing demand and margin compression as a result of competitive offerings from Apple and others.Goldman believes that following its sharp pullback, the stock already prices in the risk that FY10 (Feb) Street estimates will come down further, and they remain 20% below consensus at $3.62 vs. the Street at $4.55, reflecting just 4% YoY growth. However, with the stock trading at 13X below-consensus estimate, compared to the S&P500 at 11X and coverage median of 16X, they see the valuation as compelling, as they think RIM can grow its earnings in the high teens going forward past 2009 due to its increasing market share in the rapidly growing smartphone market. Firm sees 44% upside to their 12-month price target of $68, based on 19X P/E….
