Returns — For Calendar Year 2008

Wow! What a Year! We have to go back to the Great Depression to find a stock market performance that was worse than this year. For 2008, the S&P 500 declined by 38.3% which makes 2008 the single worst percentage decline since 1931, when the S&P 500 declined 43.4%. The Covered Calls Advisor Portfolio(CCAP) declined by 20.48% in 2008. While this is certainly not a satisfactory result, when viewed in direct comparison with the 38.39% decline in the Russell 3000 Index ETF (ticker symbol IWV) overall stock market benchmark, the CCAP substantially outperformed by a total of 17.9 (38.39%-20.48%) percentage points. …

Good Riddance 2008 - Hello 2009!

Not much is going to happen today or tomorrow so I want to review the events in the past year. The market was chugging along and it made a new all-time high in October of 2007. The cracks in the dam surfaced a year ago when we failed to see a year-end rally in a pre-election year. January painted a very clear picture when the market broke a five-year uptrend line and it breached the 12-month moving average. In July, the market broke the neckline of a head-and-shoulders formation on a four-year chart when it broke below SPY 130. During August, …

Will Retail ETFs Pick Up the Pace?

The holiday shopping season is drawing to a close, and the retailers and related exchange traded funds (ETFs) didn’t get the turnout they had hoped for.

Watch the Baltic Dry Index in 2009

In 2009 investors will be scanning the globe for signs of economic recovery or deterioration. Among the many tools they should be watching in order to gauge the strength of global trade is the Baltic Dry Index (BDI.) The Baltic Dry Index measures shipping rates for dry bulk carriers that carry commodities such as coal, iron and other ores, cocoa, grains, phosphates, fertilizers, animal feeds, etc. In short, the BDI is an excellent proxy for global trade. …

Ceradyne (NASDAQ:CRDN): Downgraded to Hold at Morgan Joseph

Little known Morgan Joseph is out with a downgrade on Ceradyne (NASDAQ:CRDN). Firm is lowering their rating to Hold from Buy after their due diligence shows Ceradyne will not ship any of its new X-SAPI body armor in 4Q08 as a result of a contract protest by a competitor. If the matter had been settled quickly, Ceradyne might have made shipments by year-end. Instead, the Army has decided to start from scratch and seek new bids from suppliers. Those bids are expected to be submitted in mid-January, with orders possible as soon as the end of the month….

Why Families Should Discuss Money and ETFs

Stop Blaming SKF!

Another argument against SKF and some -2x brethren *causing* the volatility surge in the Fall of 08? Well, why didn’t they cause the surge in the summer. If you look at the percent SKF adjusted volume (adjusted for the dollar amount of financial stocks it represented) comprised of the total SKF and XLF volume, SKF was just as popular in July as it was in October. And as the chart shows, actually had a significantly higher actual volume in July….

What Baltic Dry Index Says About Economy and ETFs

While there are exchange traded funds (ETFs) that represent the shipping sector, none track the Baltic Dry Index. But that doesn’t mean one should ignore this index - it can tell us a lot of things about the global economy and the shipping sector.

VIX Close of 41.63 Is Lowest in Three Months

The last time the VIX closed below 42.00 was way back on October 1st, when the VIX closed at 39.81. Before anyone gets excited about the possibility of the VIX back in the 30s, I should note that the VIX futures continue to reflect expectations of a rising VIX over the course of at least the next 2-3 months. Today’s VIX January futures settled at 44.18 and the February futures settled at 45.08. Futures for August through October are now priced in the 37-38 range, however, suggesting that volatility expectations are being lowered for the second half of 2009….
