Got some questions/comments as to why I used 10 Day Historical volatility the other day to measure actual stock volatility, as opposed to say 30 day HV, as in most standard volatility stats, like the VIX.Short answer is that the shorter the time frame, the less data and the “noisier” the measure the gets. And the better it demonstates stock volatility in the here and now. The blue line in the charts here from top to bottom shows 120 day HV, 30 day HV and 10 day HV over the past 3 month’s. If you’re sitting at home trading stocks, which one closer approvimates what you’re *feeling*? Pretty certainly the 10 day measure….

I’m returning to chart the PowerShares QQQ Trust Series 1 (QQQQ) for the first time in a while. I only went back one month with today’s chart because I think I see the best story on such a short time frame. What I see (although it might be too early to be sure) is a potential new trading channel for QQQQ. The current price is creeping back up to the longer term down trend of lower highs which could coincide with the top side of this new trading channel this week.

NASDAQ reported new trading records for exchange traded funds (ETFs) as of Thursday. The turbulent market ride wasn’t all just in vain as September has an average daily trading volume of 785 million shares on U.S.-listed ETFs.
What’s more, the volume of U.S. ETFs traded on NASDAQ also……
