Africa’s Tough Decisions About Food or Water Help Certain ETFs

In Africa, the population is struggling with a life-or-life dilemma that could help infrastructure, agriculture and water-related exchange traded funds (ETFs).
For years, the countries in North Africa have drained aquifers, sucked the salt from seawater and diverted the Nile River in order to make deserts bloom, s…

Animal Care ETF Seems to Be a Drool-and-Pant-Worthy Idea

An animal care exchange traded fund (ETF) could be an idea whose time has come.
Anyone who has a pet is all-too-familiar with the vet and the worry that comes with each visit: What’s wrong with my animal? How much is this going to cost? And many people will spend whatever it takes to get their furry friend back to his old spunky self. Why shouldn’t pet lovers be allowed to capitalize on that desire, too?

Sweden and ETF Are Like Your Big Brother, Setting a Good Example

For successful economic development, Turkish officials should look up to Sweden as an example of successful privatization, which could boost the performance of both countries’ respective exchange traded funds (ETFs).
Benefits of privatization include producing more wealth for everyone, such as workers, employees and businessmen. Ishak Alaton for the Swedish-Turkish Business Council says such moves could help companies in Turkey function as vibrant motors of the economy.

Money Pulls Out of Energy ETFs After Oil Sinks

Look at morningstar vs. drilling

Last week’s drop in oil prices led to money shifting away from energy-related exchange traded funds (ETFs).
And, of all places, investors appear to be putting it into financials.
As crude oil fell below $130 a barrel on Friday, the Energy Select Sector SPDRs (X…

Bank of America Delivers Goods to Financial ETFs

Financial exchange traded funds (ETFs) are getting off to a solid start this morning after Bank of America announced earnings that were better than expected.
The news raised hopes that the wounds of the credit crisis might finally be cauterizing. With Bank of America’s numbers, that means four of the country’s five largest banks have reported earnings that have beaten expectations, r…

First Inspectd.com; Now Chartgame.com

First there was Inspectd.com, a nice little site to practice your technical analysis skills with what is essentially a chart trading simulation program, where you start with $100,000 and use charts, moving averages, and volume to make long or short bets on the stock charts that are presented at random. This is a fun site that is both educational and addictive.Upping the ante a little, now we have C…

Starbuck’s Corp. (SBUX), the world’s coffee empire, has begun to shut down underperforming U.S. stores, but now they’re turning their attentions toward China, possibly jolting stock and exchange traded funds (ETFs) for the country.

5 Trades This Morning - AA, BNI, FCX, JOYG, KFT

As I wrote earlier today I had a lot of option assignments from this past Friday’s option expiration.  Kraft (KFT) was one from earlier in the month as an early assignment.  I held it for two weeks without selling covered calls on it.  KFT closed at $28.70 the day before my shares were assigned.  Today I closed my position when I s…

Time for Reader Input: Does the VIX Have Market Timing Value?

I am going to try something different today: I’ll frame an issue in the context of an article from a highly regarded pundit, skip my own commentary, and ask for readers to weigh in with their thoughts. We’ll see how this works, if it works at all… First, a quick summary of the pundit and the issue. Mark Hulbert, who I happen to think highly of, is out today with an interesting point of view in P…

Keep An Eye on XLF, XHB, XLY and XLE for Rally Strength

We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we’ve been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We’ve also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, w…

Options Expiration - July 2008

I’m still trying to get my bearings after missing the past two trading days and not even returning from vacation until Sunday evening.  Since I’m just now trying to get my hands around what happened I haven’t figured out all of my exact profit and losses for each position with so many balancing trades that countered each other out.  These are the expiration details of my 16 different July options.

Rewards Could Come With Risk In Emerging Markets ETFs

Emerging market exchange traded funds (ETFs) are one of the best ways to diversify, and investors have found that they have generated exciting returns in recent years.
If you can stomach the risk that often comes with these areas of the world, investors might be able to capture some of the potential that developing countries offer, M…

Bank Shorts

This recent rally in financials creates a few great shorting opportunities. However, I think that the group will start to diverge internally. What I mean by that is that I think the survivors will start to seperate themselves from the overall trend, and the weaker players will  continue to struggle. As I have sorted through the group and looked at several charts, I have decided on a few set-ups that I like, and I have also decided to stay away from the “major players” with the exception of Lehman; which I still believe will be the next Bear Sterns. Here are a few charts that illustrate a few easy to manage put plays.

Biogen-Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB): Upgraded to Buy at Merrill Lynch

Merrill Lynch upgrades Biogen-Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB) to Buy from Underperform based on their assessment of the company’s earnings growth potential, an improved outlook in the multiple sclerosis (MS) market, and a diversified mid to late-stage pipeline. Applying an average biotech P/E of 19x 2009E EPS (implied PEG of 1.0) they believe BIIB is significantly undervalued given expected growth, driven by acceleration of Tysabri usage in MS and the recent launch in Crohn’s.
