Not sure if I make this clear, but I always find “Blame the Speculator When Something Doesn’t Move The Direction We Want It To” both nonsensical and a useless distraction to the trading and investing task at hand.I…

Natural Gas ETFs Could Burn Bright In Growing Shortage

31 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 21:00

Gasburner Natural gas exchange traded funds (ETFs) certainly haven’t been shouting as loud as those for other commodities (hello, oil), but they’ve been delivering the returns.

The commodity has been a standout in what has been a rough and volatile market so far this year.

The one-year anniversary of the F…

Where To Get Free Live Crude Oil Charting

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 23:35

Sorry for the absence here. Took advantage of the long weekend to go on a short trip. Hope you all had a good rest and good trading week.In my earlier post, I talked about Solar & Airline Sector Vs Crude Oil. With oil and gas being in the focus everyday and its negative impact on the equities market, those who are day-trading will find it useful to follow movement of crude oil. While I understand thinkorswim is planning to have the crude oil futures data soon, they gave no time frame as to when it is expected to be release. Not wanting to sit around to wait especially with oil moving inversely to the market, I went around looking for F…

Yawning About Friday

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 22:48

We made a terrible mistake yesterday. We complained that the market action was kind of boring, and that there wasn’t much worth talking about. But comparatively speaking, yesterday was like winning the lottery while riding a rollercoaster on the private island you just found out you’d inherited. T…

May ETF Performance Report

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 22:02

Springtime Overall, May wasn’t a bad month for exchange traded fund (ETF) investors, but the economy still faces some hurdles. Two of the major indexes finished higher while the Dow Jones industrial average lost 1.4%. The S&P 500 was up 1.1% and the Nasdaq gained 4.6%.

The high cost of oil and gas continued to strain consumer confidence, however, and a report was issued today that showed sentiment was at a 28-year low. Although oil pulled back from its record above $135 a barrel to close at $127.35, it’s still cutting into spending and has people wondered about prices rising further during the summer travel season.

The Market Could Attempt A Breakout Next Week.

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 21:41

After challenging major resistance at SPY 144 two weeks ago, the market pulled back 4.5% heading into the holiday weekend. When trading resumed this week, the market regained its footing. Minor horizontal support held at SPY 138. The economic news this week has been generally positive. Durable goods orders came in better than expected and excluding transportation they were up 2.4%. The GDP was revised upward from .6% to .9% and the price deflator (which does not include food or energy) was revised downward by .1%. Initial jobless claims came in at 372k, which was in line with expectations. Next week, …

Some ETFs Might Be Up, But Consumers Are Feeling Down

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 19:00

Scowl Feeling a little crabby lately, even though your commodity exchange traded funds (ETFs) are putting up decent numbers? You’re not alone: consumer sentiment is at a 28-year low.

Closed SPY Calls

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 17:29

Last Friday I bought a couple of calls on the S&P 500 ETF, SPY.  SPY is having a very hard time crossing its 10 and 20 day moving averages and staying above it.  It made it above both lines yesterday and today, but both days fell back below it.  Around my lunch break, while SPY was trading at 140.35, I sold both of my call options on SPY and paid $258.50 with commissions.  That gave me a profit of $57.01 for the past week.  That’s a 28% return in one week.  Too bad I only went in with $200.

Joy Global (JOYG), Profit +40%

30 May, 2008 Derivatives | Comments (0) @ 17:26

Joy Global (JOYG) announced it quarterly earnings yesterday. The stock rallied sharply but to drift lower by session close. The outlook was raised and everything else seemed in place, well, Mr Market didn’t think so. So at OPN, an alert for bonus speculative trade was sent…It did for very little time but it fell, some of my orders were triggered already. It gave that chance once again today and rest is history:
